About KEF

KAIVALYA means freedom from a conditioned existence. Kaivalya Education Foundation (KEF) was born from the recognition that the country’s education system faces grave crises.

The government’s school construction drive has ensured that 94% of children are now within 1 km of a primary school. An average of 87% teachers attend their schools. 75% of the enrolled children attend school with only 4.2% accounting as the un-enrolled. But these figures paint an incomplete picture. Despite great strides in access to schools, enrollment rates and teacher attendance, learning quality remains poor. 11 crore school-aged children are illiterate; they cannot read a paragraph of text in their mother tongue. Children are being deprived of an education. Of the total number of illiterate children, 5.5 crore will drop out of school after only 4 years. Only 40% of relevant age children complete secondary education.

India’s primary education system needs to be fixed – one school principal at a time. KEF’s goal is to train & equip principals to run schools better.

Vision
KEF’s vision is to create long term social change leaders with the courage to convert their Private Dream into a Public Reality. KEF was established in 2007 and has initiated 2 programs, the Gandhi Fellowship and the Principal Leadership Development Programme.
